How Can You Motivate Your Employees to Learn New Skills

Soren Juul 2019-09-06 General

Every business owner knows that their employees are one of their most valuable assets. No business could operate without staff members and, in order to fully leverage the company, has to help them learn and grow in the workplace. If you see your employees struggle to show progress, it means it’s time to spark their passion and ensure they continue to keep improving. That said, here are five ways you can motivate your employees to learn new skills.

Create a positive work environment

happy

With most people spending 1/3 of their lives working, being happy at the workplace can be a huge-difference maker. When they’re happy, your employees won’t only get their work done more efficiently, but they’ll also be more likely to keep improving their skills. Therefore, it’s a good idea to ensure your staff members operate in a positive work environment. The best part of it is that creating such a work environment is easy and inexpensive. For example, improving office design, preparing snacks, and allowing more flexible work hours can do the trick.

Offer interesting and challenging work

No matter how much your employees love what they do, there’s a risk they’ll lose that loving feeling over time. Doing the same thing every day is boring and it can seriously affect your employees’ eagerness to continue to improve. This is why you, as the business owner, have to do everything you can do help them stay motivated. If you notice they get bored at work, it means it’s time to give them interesting and more challenging work. Giving them a chance to go beyond their comfort zones is a guaranteed way to ensure they keep improving.

Pay them on time

We all work because we want to earn money. Fail to pay your employees on time and chances are they won’t be eager to learn new skills. After all, why should they if they don’t feel your business is treating them the way they deserve? Luckily, you can now implement employee income cards and automate the entire payroll process which should help ensure they always receive their paycheck on time. Adding a bonus to those who have shown incentive to keep improving their skills is also something you can never go wrong with.

Promote e-learning

We live in the age of technology and improving your skills is easier than ever. This is something your employees should use to their advantage and it’s up to you to help them do it. Look for online courses and seminars your staff members might find useful and share them with the entire team. What’s so great about it is that learning online allows your employees to set their own schedules, which isn’t the case with offline learning. If you find online courses worth taking, you might even get a discount if you have a group of employees take it.

Conduct performance reviews

work

Another smart thing to do when trying to encourage your employees to learn new skills is to conduct performance reviews on a regular basis. What these things can do is give your staff members a chance to discover skill gaps and motivate them to work on them. Once they figure out what areas of their work they should improve, it’s your job to provide them with the necessary training. After the training has been completed, you can conduct performance reviews again and test whether their skills have really improved.

Final thoughts

Encouraging your employees to learn new skills is a win-win situation. Just think about it – you get better employees while they get to learn something that could be beneficial for their career and might even earn them a raise. Implement the five ways covered in this post and there’s no doubt you’ll see your employees starting to work on polishing up their skills.
